Design rules, mimicry and natural elements in the DWeb visual identity

â–‰visual identity + creative direction    â–‰2021-2025    â–‰getdweb.net

Since the inception of the DWeb network in 2018 and the launch of the DWeb website in 2020, our networked community has grown to 12 DWeb Nodes and more than 2,000 members, most of whom attended the annual DWeb Camps.
It's been an honor for me to contribute to the community as its designer and Creative Director for the DWeb Camps.
Below is the design work I've done for DWeb during 2021-2025.

DWeb Principles

In 2020, the DWeb team did thorough work on the DWeb Principles. The process was led by Mai Ishikawa Sutton and John Ryan, with the inaugural public launch of the Principles in February 2021.

Since then, thousands of people have endorsed the DWeb Principles. We hosted several sessions on how to implement them in DWeb projects. Since 2022, we base the DWeb Camp session selection on how well a given topic or project aligns with the Principles.

event covers

The main activation for the DWeb movement happens through events—virtual and in-person.

Virtual event cover design follows a layout formula that has proven its efficiency and responsiveness since 2020:

↳  the theme defines the key visual, which should have a circular or rounded shape
↳  the key visual should be executed with DWeb dots (fully or just as decoration)

↳  color is defined by the key visual or theme but can also follow a default palette
↳  our "chameleon-y" logo takes the color of the key visual.

In 2025 we launched the DWeb Events website, where everyone in the network can list events they are organizing or planning to attend.

DWeb Atelier
at FtC Berlin

In 2025, DWeb partnered with Funding the Commons for their Forum in Berlin. Ryan Taylor (who leads DWebBLN Node since I moved to Spain), Arkadiy Kukarkin and I (as Node's ex-lead) curated a pop-up space at the FtC Forum Berlin — the DWeb Atelier — where we hosted intimate discussions on human-centered network infrastructures, privacy, community, and digital autonomy.

Tomorrow
by DWeb

We dedicated the second day of DWeb Atelier at FtC to the Tomorrow Day.

The concept of Tomorrow originates from DWeb Camp 2023, where we experimented with new storytelling for the open-space and unconference format (2-in-1). We brought this concept to the FtC Berlin event.

I prepared session cards for attendees to fill out and designed them as invitations. Since the graphic concept of Tomorrow is a bit "spooky," I wanted to maintain this atmosphere. At the same time, I wanted to avoid too much dark mode in our collateral.

I gave both Tomorrow's assets — the stickers and invitations — a glow-at-night look. We created glow-in-the-dark stickers, and I decorated simple black-on-white cards with luminescent spray. Both produced a "wow" effect in the evening, as we hadn't told attendees that anything would glow.

Aprons for the DWeb seminar

In August 2025, Wendy Hanamura led a new format for DWeb events — the DWeb Seminar. Twenty researchers and protocol builders gathered in San Francisco for a weekend of intensive co-programming and applied cryptography discussions around P2P protocols.

All 10 participants received special swag—the DWeb aprons.

I personally know half the participants and their nature-oriented and collective attitude when building technology. So I suggested a water-lily-inspired concept for the embroidery with the hidden "DWeb" word to symbolize the weaving of ideas and 10 dots (buds) that stood for the number of participants.

People, projects,
protocols

What we have done so far wouldn't be possible without a team that has been meeting every Tuesday to keep moving forward:

Wendy Hanamura, who leads us
Mai Ishikawa Sutton, who coordinates projects and community efforts
Kevin Nguyen, Arkadiy Kukarkin and Ian Davis, who non-stop improve our tech stack
Ese Ojo and Tommi Marmo, who lead the communication strategy.
